It is important in the developing eye that any anomalies are identified and remedied.
Children can’t always appreciate how well they should be seeing and may not show any signs of having a problem. This may have an effect on the child’s educational development.
We will check for any refractive errors as well as ensuring that muscle balance and colour vision are normal for their age.

Even when all these conditions are satisfactory a child may suffer from Visual Stress which inhibits reading ability, whether bookwork, music or whiteboard. This is known as Meares-Irlen Syndrome which is often associated with Dyslexia. This can lead some to find that the regular pattern of words on a white background is uncomfortable to look at.

Help with this discomfort can be alleviated with the use of coloured filters. It is estimated 5% of the population can read 20% faster by using the correct colour filter. We have tests to assess both the improvement that can be made and the best colour to achieve this.

Children up to the age of 18 in full time education are entitled to an NHS funded sight test and help towards the cost of correction.

If your child does need spectacles we have a fantastic range of frames to choose from and can even dispense prescription sunglasses and Contact Lenses for children were appropriate.
